The UNDP-GEF Global ABS Project held a Knowledge Café on Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit Sharing (ABS) on Wednesday 15th May 2019at the UNDP Regional Service Center for Latin America and the Caribbean, located in Ciudad del Saber, Panama.
This event was an opportunity to inform local staff the key accomplishments and challenges faced by the UNDP-GEF Global ABS Project´s “Strenghtening human resources, legal frameworks and institutional capacities to implement the Nagoya Protocol”. The meeting allowed for the exploration of potential synergies and connections with other projects and agencies, directly interacting with the UNDP-GEF Global ABS Project team.
The Knowledge Café was opened by Ms. Linda Maguire, Resident Representative of UNDP Panama´s country office and Ms. Lita Paparoni, Regional Manager for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations Volunteers Programme (UNV). Among the speakers were Mr. Santiago Carrizosa, Global ABS Advisor for UNDP-GEF; Mr. Alejandro Lago, UNDP-GEF Global ABS Project Manager; Global ABS Project Regional Specialists Mr. Fouad Bergigui (Africa), Mr. Anthony Foronda (Asia) and Mr. Claudio Chiarolla (Eastern Europe and Arab States), and Mr. Fernando Lopez and Ms. Agustina Rato, both UNDP-GEF Global ABS Project/UNV Component.
Regional specialists introduced the community of practice workshops held in the different regions, innovations and emergent issues, the UNDP-GEF Global ABS Project MIND your Step! Gender toolkit!, intellectual property guidance and traceability of genetic resources and blockchain.
