Global ABS Project Final Workshop: Achievements, Challenges, and Opportunities. Making ABS Work for All

In mid-2021, the UNDP-GEF Global ABS Project will close. This final workshop provided an opportunity to assess the project’s impacts and discuss challenges, and opportunities to ensure the sustainability of the project’s outcomes. This private event gathered the 23 countries covered by the project to exchange experiences and lessons learned on the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol at the national level.

Objectives

This final event of the UNDP-GEF Global ABS Project had the following objectives:

  1. Share achievements, and identify conditions that facilitated successful outcomes;
  2. Share lessons learned, including challenges and strategies to ensure the sustainability of project’s outcomes;
  3. Identify gaps and needs that still need to be addressed for an effective implementation of the Nagoya Protocol;
  4. Discuss opportunities to facilitate mutual collaboration at the regional and global levels to ensure the full implementation of the Nagoya Protocol.

The event took place from May 10th to 20thand it consisted of 3 online sessions of two and a half hours per session. Countries presented their experiences by project component, followed by a debate to provide a regional/global perspective, conclusions and next steps to continue working for a full implementation of the Nagoya Protocol.
