GEF Small Grants Programme engagement with Indigenous Peoples: a retrospective review of 25 years and plans for the future
April 29 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm EDT
The GEF Small Grants Programme invites to a side event at this year’s UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), to be held on Thursday 29 April from 9am to 10:30am (EDT – New York) via Zoom.
This side event will highlight how Indigenous Peoples have been stewards of the global environment and how international organizations can best support them. The event will introduce a retrospective report on 25 years of engagement with Indigenous Peoples by the GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP), implemented by UNDP.
The online event will feature a panel of speakers to discuss how SGP projects and initiatives have engaged and empowered Indigenous Peoples in traditional sustainable natural resource management, mitigation and adaptation to climate change, reduction of toxic chemical pollution/mercury, and through the Indigenous Fellowship programme. The panel will review how SGP can better support Indigenous Peoples during the next GEF-8 funding cycle.
There will also be an update on the activities of the GEF’s Indigenous Peoples’ Advisory Group (IPAG), including the role of and opportunities for Indigenous Peoples and local communities in the current GEF funding cycle.
